India Series to Provide Ideal Preparation for T20 World Cup, Says Lockie Ferguson

New Zealand fast bowler Lockie Ferguson reckons the five-match T20I series against India, beginning Wednesday, will serve as ideal preparation for next month's T20 World Cup.

New Zealand fast bowler Lockie Ferguson believes the upcoming five-match T20I series against India will serve as ideal preparation for the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup, which begins on February 7. Riding high after a historic ODI series victory over India, the Blackcaps are now shifting focus to the shortest format, starting with the first T20I in Nagpur.

Ferguson, who is set to join the squad in India, said playing against India in their home conditions would provide invaluable experience ahead of the global tournament. “It’s literally perfect preparation,” Ferguson said before leaving for India. “While the grounds may differ, experiencing factors like dew, pitch conditions, and match intensity at this time is extremely beneficial heading into the World Cup.”

Calling India one of the world’s strongest teams, Ferguson added that competing against them on home turf would push the New Zealand squad to perform at a high level.

The 34-year-old pacer, who will feature for Punjab Kings in IPL 2026, revealed that he has returned to full bowling intensity after recovering from a calf injury sustained during the ILT20 in the UAE. Although not named in New Zealand’s updated squad list yet, Ferguson expressed confidence about featuring in the India series.

Ferguson also confirmed he will take a brief paternity break during the T20 World Cup, with his child expected around February 20. Despite injury setbacks and opting out of a central contract, the veteran ruled out retirement, stating he still feels fit and capable of contributing at the highest level.
