Deadly Chinese Manja Strikes Again, Two Seriously Injured in Cuttack

Two people sustained serious injuries after a sharp Chinese manja string struck a moving motorcycle in Cuttack’s Bayalis Mouza area, once again highlighting the dangers posed by the illegal kite-flying material.

The hazardous use of Chinese manja claimed yet another set of victims in Cuttack on Wednesday, when two persons were seriously injured after a sharp kite string came in contact with them while they were riding a motorcycle.

According to sources, a young man was travelling with his aunt as a pillion rider in the Bayalis Mouza area when a sharp manja string suddenly snapped across the road and struck them. The string reportedly slashed the rider’s neck, causing severe injuries, while the woman riding behind him also sustained wounds in the incident.

Both victims, identified as Debikalyan Acharya and Ashalata Acharya, were rushed to a nearby hospital for immediate medical attention. Doctors confirmed that the injuries were serious but said the victims were stable at the time of admission.

The incident has once again brought attention to the dangers posed by the use of banned Chinese manja, which is known for causing fatal injuries to pedestrians, riders, and even birds. Despite repeated warnings and restrictions, its illegal use continues in several areas.

Local residents expressed strong concern over the recurring incidents and accused authorities of failing to enforce existing bans effectively. “The manja came out of nowhere and cut his throat. His aunt was also injured. There is no proper checking, and such negligence is putting innocent lives at risk,” said a local resident.

Residents have urged the administration to take strict action against the sale and use of banned manja and intensify enforcement to prevent further accidents.
