Reports from Pakistani media indicate that former captain Sarfaraz Ahmed is likely to be officially appointed as the head coach of the Pakistan men’s Test cricket team. Ahmed, who played 54 Tests, 117 ODIs, and 61 T20Is between 2007 and 2023, will take over from Azhar Mahmood, who served as interim coach after Jason Gillespie’s departure in 2025.
Sarfaraz will begin his coaching tenure with the upcoming ICC World Test Championship series against Bangladesh in May 2026. He previously gained coaching experience with Pakistan Shaheens and the U-19 setup, leading the U-19 team to an Asia Cup triumph over India in November 2025.
Pakistan’s Test team, currently fifth in the WTC standings with one win and one defeat, has never reached the WTC final since the tournament began in 2019. Sarfaraz’s appointment comes amid ongoing restructuring in Pakistan cricket following underwhelming performances in ICC events and the T20 World Cup 2026, where white-ball coach Mike Hesson’s position also remains under scrutiny.
