Former Bangladesh captainTamim Iqbalhas advised theBangladesh Cricket Board (BCB)to exercise caution and independence as it considers a crucial decision regarding the national team’s participation in the upcomingICC Men's T20 World Cup 2026, co-hosted by India and Sri Lanka.
With the tournament set to begin onFebruary 7, Tamim warned that decisions taken under public pressure could havelong-term consequences for Bangladesh cricket, potentially shaping the game’s future in the country for years to come.
“You have to consider where Bangladesh stands in world cricket and what the future of Bangladesh cricket could be, and then make decisions accordingly,” Tamim was quoted as saying, stressing that cricketing choices should be guided by long-term interests rather than emotion.
The remarks come amid rising political and public tension in Bangladesh over the team’s scheduled travel to India. The BCB has formally written twice to theInternational Cricket Council (ICC), requesting that Bangladesh’s matches be shifted out of India, citing security concerns.
Bangladesh are currently scheduled to playfour matches in India—three inKolkataand one inMumbai—but have asked that the fixtures be moved toSri Lanka.
The issue intensified following the release of Bangladesh pacerMustafizur Rahmanfrom hisIndian Premier Leaguecontract, a decision that further strained relations between the two cricket boards.
Tamim emphasised that while discussions with the government are important, the BCB must retain its autonomy as a governing body.
“If we consider the BCB an independent body, then it must also have the authority to make its own decisions,” he said.
He also cautioned against allowing fan sentiment to influence policy decisions.
“Public opinion will always vary. When we play, spectators say many things driven by emotion. But if you start making decisions based on all that, you cannot run such a big organisation.”
According to sources, the ICC has sought further clarity on the security concerns raised by the BCB but hasnot yet confirmed any venue changes. The global body is understood to be engaging with the Bangladesh board to assess the situation, with a final decision expected to be communicated byJanuary 10.
As uncertainty continues, Tamim’s message stands out as a call for restraint, dialogue, and long-term thinking—urging Bangladesh cricket to look beyond immediate controversy and protect its future on the global stage.
