England’s preparations for theT20 World Cup 2026have been disrupted after key spinnersAdil RashidandRehan Ahmedwere delayed by visa clearances from the Indian government. The issue is expected to prevent both players from travelling with the rest of the England squad to Sri Lanka for an important white-ball series ahead of the global tournament.
According to reports, the delay stems from additional administrative scrutiny applied to applicants of Pakistani origin, regardless of nationality or team representation. While theEngland and Wales Cricket Board (ECB)has received assurances that there are no objections to either player’s application, the timeline for approval remains unclear. As a result, the ECB has sought help from the UK government to expedite the process.
Rashid is currently playing in South Africa’s SA20 league, while Ahmed is featuring in Australia’s Big Bash League. England officials are hopeful that both players will be able to link up directly with the squad in Sri Lanka or India once visas are granted.
England are scheduled to playthree ODIs and three T20Is in Sri Lanka from January 22, but the absence of Rashid and Ahmed could leave captain Harry Brook short of frontline spin options. Liam Dawson is currently the only specialist spinner available, with part-time bowlers such as Will Jacks and Jacob Bethell potentially expected to share the workload if the delays continue.
Despite the disruption, the ECB remains confident that both players will be cleared in time for the World Cup. England begin their campaign against Nepal in Mumbai onFebruary 8, under pressure following a heavy1–4 Ashes series defeat.
Separately, England’s group-stage clash against Bangladesh remains in doubt after Bangladesh requested the ICC to shift their matches to a neutral venue, citing security concerns amid ongoing tensions with India. Pakistan’s matches have already been relocated to Sri Lanka, though the BCCI is reportedly opposed to further changes to the tournament schedule.
With visa uncertainty and venue questions looming, England’s road to the T20 World Cup is proving challenging even before the tournament begins.
