A tragic explosion in the Jagatpur area of Cuttack district has claimed the lives of a mother and her daughter, intensifying concerns over illegal firecracker manufacturing and storage in residential neighbourhoods.
The blast occurred on Thursday inside a house at Mahajanpur under Jagatpur. Three family members sustained severe burn injuries in the incident and were rushed to SCB Medical College and Hospital (SCBMCH) for treatment. On Friday, two of the injured — a mother and her daughter — succumbed to their injuries while undergoing medical care. A child injured in the explosion continues to battle for life and remains under intensive treatment, hospital sources said.
According to preliminary reports, firecrackers were allegedly being assembled illegally inside the house when the explosion occurred. The impact of the blast was severe, gutting two rooms and causing extensive structural damage. The powerful detonation triggered panic among residents in the locality.
Three members of the family — the wife, daughter-in-law and granddaughter of the house owner — had suffered critical burn injuries following the explosion. Despite medical efforts, two lives could not be saved.
Initial investigations indicate that Govinda Nayak, a local resident, had allegedly stored firecrackers at the premises. The explosion reportedly took place during the process of assembling additional firecrackers inside the house.
Authorities are now probing the alleged illegal storage and handling of explosive materials in the residential building. The tragedy has once again highlighted the serious risks posed by unauthorized firecracker manufacturing and storage within densely populated areas.
Police and administrative officials are examining the exact cause of the blast and whether safety regulations were violated. Further investigation is underway to determine accountability and prevent recurrence of such incidents.
