BAFTA Apologises to Michael B. Jordan, Delroy Lindo for Racist Slur; Takes Full Responsibility

The British Academy Film Awards (BAFTA) and the BBC have issued formal apologies to actors Michael B. Jordan and Delroy Lindo after a racial slur was broadcast during the 2026 awards ceremony while they were presenting. The academy acknowledged the harm caused, took full responsibility, and pledged to learn from the incident.

At the79th BAFTA Film AwardsinLondon, an unexpected and distressing incident occurred when Tourette syndrome campaignerJohn Davidsoninvoluntarily shouted a racial slur — theN‑word— while actorsMichael B. JordanandDelroy Lindowere presenting an award on stage. The offensive language was broadcast during the BBC’s delayed telecast, prompting immediate public backlash and concern.

BAFTA released a detailed statement onFebruary 23, 2026, saying the offensive language “carries incomparable trauma and pain for so many” and apologisingunconditionallyto Jordan, Lindo, and all those affected. The academy acknowledged that although attendees were informed beforehand about Davidson’s condition — which can cause involuntary vocal outbursts — the incident placed guests in a “very difficult position.” BAFTA stated it takes “full responsibility” for what happened and emphasised its commitment to inclusion, compassion, and accountability going forward.

The BBC also apologised for the lapse in editorial oversight that allowed the slur to remain in the two‑hour delayed broadcast and later removed the segment from its iPlayer streaming service. HostAlan Cummingaddressed the incident during the live ceremony, noting that Davidson’s vocal outburst was associated with his neurological condition and not deliberate. Despite this, many industry figures and viewers criticised the handling of the broadcast and the timing and tone of the apologies, especially given the sensitive nature of the racial slur and its broadcast impact.

Jordan and Lindo continued the presentation with professionalism despite the shock, and BAFTA publicly thanked them for their composure. The episode sparked broader conversations about live broadcast safeguards, inclusive practices for disability representation, and the importance of protecting performers from offensive language during high‑profile events.
