Aryna Sabalenka delivered a powerful statement at the Brisbane International, dismantling Spain’s Cristina Bucsa 6-0, 6-1 in just 47 minutes to cruise into the third round. The emphatic win marked one of the quickest victories of Sabalenka’s career and underlined her strong early momentum ahead of the Australian Open, which begins later this month.
The top seed dominated from the outset, breaking serve repeatedly and racing through the opening set in just 22 minutes. Her aggressive baseline play and booming serve proved decisive, as she finished the match with 18 winners and sealed victory with an ace. Sabalenka said she was pleased with her level and particularly encouraged by how well her serve and net play functioned in her first competitive outing of the year.
In contrast, Nick Kyrgios’s much-anticipated return to singles competition ended in disappointment. Playing his first singles match in nearly a year, the former Wimbledon finalist struggled to find rhythm and went down 6-3, 6-4 to American Aleksandar Kovacevic. Despite strong crowd support, Kyrgios appeared short of match sharpness after a long injury layoff.
The Australian is now expected to focus on rebuilding fitness and confidence through doubles, where he is partnering Thanasi Kokkinakis, as he continues to push for a wildcard entry into the Australian Open.
While Sabalenka’s dominant display reinforced her status as a leading title contender in Melbourne, Kyrgios’s early exit highlighted the contrasting paths of two of the tournament’s biggest draws as the 2026 tennis season gets underway.
