Two alleged ganja peddlers were arrested atBhubaneswar railway stationon Tuesday after a sniffer dog detected the presence of contraband during a routine security inspection conducted by theRailway Protection Force (RPF).
According to officials, an RPF team was carrying out a regular check at the station with the assistance of a K-9 squad when the sniffer dog alerted personnel to suspicious individuals. The suspects were immediately intercepted and searched.
During the search, ganja was recovered from their possession, following which both individuals were taken into custody.
Officials said the accused are residents ofHaryanaand were allegedly attempting to transport ganja fromOdisha’s Ganjam districtto Haryana using train services. Investigators suspect that the accused were using a major railway route, a common method adopted by smugglers to evade detection.
An RPF official said the suspects’ behaviour had raised suspicion even before the sniffer dog’s alert. “The two individuals were sitting at the station and aroused suspicion. Our K-9 squad dog pointed towards them, after which a search was conducted and ganja was recovered,” the official said.
The RPF stated that such inspections are carried out regularly, especially when trains operating on major routes arrive. Further investigation is underway to determine whether the accused are linked to a larger interstate drug smuggling network.
