The blood bank at Kantabanji Hospital in Odisha’s Bolangir district has allegedly been non-functional for the past nine days, causing severe inconvenience to patients and their families. The prolonged disruption has led to allegations of mismanagement at the district-level healthcare facility, with several patients being denied timely access to blood transfusion services.
According to local residents, patients admitted to Kantabanji Hospital, as well as those arriving for treatment, are being referred to hospitals in Titlagarh, Patnagarh, and Bolangir whenever blood is required. In some emergency cases, blood is reportedly being sourced from Titlagarh and Patnagarh and transported to Kantabanji, highlighting the strain caused by the situation.
The disruption has triggered anger among locals, who warned of protests if the issue is not resolved promptly. Sheikh Amjad, a resident of Kantabanji, said poor and needy patients are the worst affected and stressed that people from many areas depend on the hospital for critical care.
Responding to the allegations, Kantabanji Hospital in-charge Rakesh Pandit acknowledged the issue and said the delay was due to pending procedural formalities. He stated that necessary documents are being uploaded and the online process is underway, assuring that the blood bank would become operational once procedures are completed. Attempts to obtain a response from the Chief District Medical Officer (CDMO) were unsuccessful.
