Atishi Video Controversy: AAP Slams BJP Over Alleged Sacrilege Claims

The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) on Saturday intensified its attack on the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), alleging that a “doctored video” of Delhi Assembly proceedings falsely portrayed remarks by Atishi as sacrilege (“beadabi”) against Sikh Gurus. The controversy escalated following a press conference by Delhi Assembly Speaker Vijender Gupta and the filing of an FIR against Delhi Law Minister Kapil Mishra.

AAP Delhi chief Saurabh Bharadwaj rejected the BJP’s claims, asserting that a full review of the proceedings shows Atishi never used the word “Guru” or “Guruon.” He challenged the Speaker to publicly confirm the alleged statement and warned that legal action would follow if the doctored clip is shared.

AAP leaders accused the BJP of intimidation and political vendetta, highlighting misuse of the Punjab Police under Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann to harass opposition lawmakers instead of maintaining law and order.

The Jalandhar Police Commissionerate confirmed an FIR against the circulation of the edited video, based on a complaint by Iqbal Singh. A forensic report dated January 9, 2026, stated the video was manipulated and words were falsely attributed to Atishi. BJP leaders, including Kapil Mishra, had alleged that Atishi insulted the ninth Sikh Guru, Guru Tegh Bahadur, during a debate on a government programme marking the Guru’s 350th martyrdom day.

The Delhi Assembly has condemned the circulation of the clip as a breach of privilege and vowed strict action against the Jalandhar police commissioner. Atishi accused the BJP of playing petty politics, stating she was addressing the party’s evasion of a discussion on pollution and stray dogs, not insulting the Guru. She added that her family has long ties with Sikhism and that she would never disrespect Guru Sahib.
