OpenAI is reportedly close to completing the first phase of a landmark funding round that could raise more than $100 billion, according to a Bloomberg report. If successful, the deal would rank among the largest private funding rounds in history and could push the company’s valuation beyond $850 billion.
But why does OpenAI need such an extraordinary amount of capital?
The answer lies in three core areas: infrastructure expansion, AI tool development, and deeper chip and cloud partnerships.
In artificial intelligence, infrastructure does not mean office buildings. It refers to hyperscale data centres, advanced computing clusters, networking systems, cooling facilities and vast energy resources required to train and deploy large AI models.
Training next-generation AI systems consumes enormous computing power. Running products like ChatGPT for millions of users globally requires constant server availability and redundancy. These operations depend on thousands of high-performance chips working simultaneously, along with sophisticated cooling systems and stable electricity supply.
Building and maintaining such infrastructure costs billions annually — and future AI ambitions could push spending into the trillions over time.
Developing AI tools is equally expensive. Continuous model training, architecture upgrades, safety testing and fine-tuning demand high-end processors and vast computing hours.
Beyond research, OpenAI is expanding its AI tools into enterprise services, developer platforms and integrated business solutions. This requires hiring world-class engineers and researchers — talent that commands some of the highest salaries in the technology sector.
Scaling AI products globally therefore demands sustained capital investment.
Bloomberg also reported that OpenAI is expected to expand its use of cloud computing services and specialised AI chips as part of partnerships with companies such as Amazon.
Cloud providers charge based on computing usage, and AI workloads are among the most resource-intensive in the industry. Advanced AI chips — often supplied by firms like Nvidia — can cost tens of thousands of dollars per unit. Large AI systems require thousands of these chips operating together.
Long-term infrastructure commitments of this scale require deep financial backing.
According to Bloomberg, OpenAI’s pre-money valuation is expected to remain around $730 billion. Including new capital, its valuation could exceed $850 billion.
The first phase of funding is expected to involve strategic investors such as Amazon, SoftBank, Nvidia and Microsoft, with a second phase potentially bringing in venture capital firms and sovereign wealth funds.
While the deal is not yet final and terms could change, the direction is clear. OpenAI’s massive fundraising effort is tied directly to scaling infrastructure, accelerating AI innovation and securing long-term cloud and chip partnerships — all of which demand unprecedented capital in the race to lead the global AI revolution.
