England cricketers placed under curfew following Ashes drinking controversy: Report

The England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) is reportedly planning to introduce a player curfew and other stricter disciplinary measures following a spate of off-field incidents during and after the recent Ashes tour in Australia and New Zealand. The move comes after England’s 4-1 Ashes defeat and ahead of a demanding subcontinent tour, with officials emphasizing “team culture” as a priority.

Reports of heavy drinking by players between the second and third Ashes Tests in Noosa, which media compared to a “stag do,” raised concerns over professionalism. The controversy was compounded by England one-day captain Harry Brook’s nightclub altercation in New Zealand, for which he was fined £30,000.

The ECB intends to implement the measures before the upcoming white-ball series in Sri Lanka and the T20 World Cup, aiming to prevent a repeat of off-field misconduct. Curfews are not unprecedented; similar rules were enforced during the 2017-18 Ashes following incidents involving Jonny Bairstow and Ben Stokes.

The disciplinary push forms part of a broader review of squad culture and professionalism, with the board signaling that off-field behavior will now carry serious consequences, even as scrutiny increases on Brendon McCullum and England’s aggressive playing approach.
