A new tropical cyclone named ‘Senyar’ has officially formed over the Malacca Strait region and adjoining northeasternIndonesia, after a deep depression drifting westward over the sea intensified into a cyclonic system.
The cyclone is currently positioned nearly 100 km east of Kut Makmur in Indonesia and approximately 600 km fromMalaysia, according to meteorological observations.
Weather experts tracking the system report that Senyar is expected to continue moving west-southwest initially and then gradually shift eastward, as it travels over the sea waters surrounding Southeast Asia.
The IMD confirmed that the intensified system originated from a deep depression over the Malacca Strait, which steadily strengthened into Cyclone Senyar as it moved westward.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has noted that although the cyclone is strengthening, its movement and trajectory indicate no direct threat to the Indian mainland at this point, particularly to the Odisha coast.
Meteorologists continue to monitor its intensity, but the storm remains far from the Bay of Bengal’s central basin, where systems usually begin posing a risk to India’s east coast.
Meanwhile, a separate weather disturbance has developed over the south-west Bay of Bengal and adjoining areas near south Sri Lanka and the Indian Ocean.
This system has formed as a low-pressure zone, is moving north and north-westwards, and is likely to become a well-marked low before turning into a depression within the next 24 hours, according to IMD projections.
However, similar to Senyar, this second system is not expected to directly influence Odisha, despite gradual intensification. Current modelling excludes Odisha as a potential impact zone even in the event of further strengthening.
Despite heightened speculation regarding a winter cyclone due to the simultaneous development of two systems, weather over Odisha is predicted to remain largely stable and dry. According to regional IMD forecasts, no rainfall is expected in the state till December 2, with only isolated cloud formation likely in some pockets.
Night temperatures across many districts may fall by 2°C–3°C over the next two days, adding to winter conditions. The only advisory in place concerns dense fog, for which a Yellow Warning has been issued for parts of Koraput and Sundargarh till early Thursday
