TheBangladesh Cricket Board (BCB)has issued a showcause notice to directorM Najmul Islamfollowing remarks that sparked a major revolt among national players, pushing Bangladesh cricket into fresh turmoil ahead of theT20 World Cup 2026.
The standoff had immediate on-field consequences, with theBangladesh Premier League (BPL)match betweenNaokhali Express and Chattogram Royalsdelayed after reports suggested that neither team reached the stadium on time due to the ongoing player protest.
In an official statement, the BCB acknowledged that Najmul Islam’s comments were “objectionable” and said formal disciplinary proceedings had been initiated. The director has been asked to submit a written explanation within 48 hours, with the board reiterating its commitment to professionalism, respect for cricketers and the values of the game.
The unrest was triggered by Najmul’s remarks downplaying player concerns over remuneration, particularly in the event of Bangladesh withdrawing from the India tour. His assertion that players did not deserve compensation further angered the playing group, who have since threatened to boycott all cricket unless he is removed from his position.
The crisis has been compounded by Bangladesh’s decision not to travel toIndia for the T20 World Cup, citing security concerns. This has placed additional strain on relations between players and administrators and raised uncertainty over Bangladesh’s participation in upcoming international events.
Tensions were further inflamed after pacerMustafizur Rahmanwas excluded from theIndian Premier League (IPL)following communication from the BCCI referring to unspecified “developments,” adding to player unease. Bangladesh is also in talks with theInternational Cricket Council (ICC), which is reportedly reluctant to shift Bangladesh’s India-based World Cup matches to Sri Lanka.
The situation escalated sharply when Najmul Islam allegedly labelled former Bangladesh captainTamim Iqbalan “agent of India” after Tamim called for restraint in handling the dispute. The comment drew widespread condemnation, including from theCricketers’ Welfare Association of Bangladesh (CWAB), which termed the remarks “utterly condemnable.”
While the BCB has promised action against Najmul through due process, it has also urged players to withdraw their boycott threat to ensure the smooth continuation ofBPL 2026. With World Cup preparations looming, Bangladesh cricket now faces mounting pressure to resolve the conflict before the damage becomes irreversible.
