Iran is facing its most serious unrest since 2022, with massive protests erupting across the country after sharp price rises turned into a broader revolt against the clerical regime. According to the US-based rights group HRANA, at least 490 protesters and 48 security personnel have been killed, and more than 10,600 people have been arrested in just two weeks.
In response, US President Donald Trump said the situation is being reviewed “hour by hour” and that the United States is considering “very strong options.” He confirmed that the US military is examining possible responses, including action against the Iranian regime if violence against civilians continues.
Trump also revealed that Tehran has reached out to Washington about potential talks on its nuclear programme and that the US may be open to engagement. At the same time, he said he remains in contact with Iranian opposition figures.
According to reports, US options range from military strikes and cyber operations to tougher sanctions and digital support for protesters. Trump is expected to meet senior advisers to decide the next steps.
Iran has reacted sharply. Parliament Speaker Mohammad Baqer Qalibaf warned that if Iran is attacked, it will target Israel, US military bases, and American ships in the region. Tehran has also accused the US and Israel of fuelling the unrest.
The regime has imposed a five-day internet shutdown, cutting off information from inside Iran. Trump said he may ask Elon Musk to use Starlink satellite internet to help restore online access.
The United Nations has expressed alarm. UN Secretary-General António Guterres said he was shocked by the violence and urged Iranian authorities to respect freedom of expression and peaceful assembly.
Meanwhile, videos shared on social media show massive night-time marches in Tehran and other cities, with protesters chanting and setting fires despite the crackdown.
With violence rising and global tensions growing, the Iran crisis has become one of the most serious international flashpoints in 2026.
