In a successful joint raid, officials from the Kalimela and MV-79 Forest Division seized 200 live turtles before they could be illegally sold in the district. The operation was conducted near MV-62 village under the Kurti Section after forest authorities received specific inputs about wildlife smuggling activities in the area.
According to forest department sources, the turtles were found concealed inside gunny sacks placed inside a Bolero vehicle parked in a forested area. Acting swiftly, officials intercepted the vehicle and recovered all 200 live turtles. However, the smugglers abandoned the vehicle and managed to escape from the scene before they could be apprehended.
Preliminary investigation suggests that the turtles were being transported from Andhra Pradesh to be sold in local markets at inflated prices. The accused reportedly purchased the turtles at lower rates and planned to sell them at higher prices within the district.
The seized turtles are estimated to be worth around ₹4 lakh in the illegal wildlife market. Forest officials have launched further investigation to identify and trace the individuals involved in the smuggling network. The rescued turtles are expected to be safely released into their natural habitat following due procedures.
Authorities have reiterated their commitment to curbing wildlife trafficking and warned that strict legal action will be taken against those involved in illegal trade.
