As tensions escalate in the Middle East following the conflict involving Iran, the United States and Israel, global attention is also turning to China’s strategic role in the region. Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi recently stated that China and Russia are supporting Iran politically and in other ways, although he did not provide specific details about the nature of the assistance.
Experts suggest that China may be helping Iran indirectly, possibly through intelligence sharing or strategic support, though there is no official confirmation of such claims. Analysts believe Beijing has significant interests in the ongoing conflict and cannot remain a passive observer.
Iran is one of China’s most important strategic partners in the Middle East and plays a critical role in Beijing’s energy security. More than half of China’s crude oil imports come from the Middle East, and a substantial portion of that supply comes from Iran. China is also the largest buyer of Iranian oil, purchasing large volumes at discounted prices despite international sanctions.
The Strait of Hormuz, which Iran controls along its coastline, is another key factor in China’s strategic calculations. This vital maritime route is crucial for transporting oil and gas shipments to China and other parts of the world. Any disruption in the region could significantly impact China’s energy supply chain.
Beyond energy, China has also supported Iran economically for years, particularly after Western sanctions targeted Tehran’s nuclear and weapons programmes. Chinese companies have invested heavily in Iran’s infrastructure, telecommunications and technology sectors. In 2021, China announced a long-term strategic cooperation agreement that includes plans to invest billions of dollars in Iran’s economy over the next 25 years.
Reports also suggest that Chinese companies have contributed to Iran’s technological capabilities, including telecommunications networks, surveillance systems and artificial intelligence infrastructure.
In the defence sector, experts say Iran’s drone and missile programmes may have benefited from Chinese dual-use components and technological support over the years. This has strengthened Iran’s military capabilities, which are now being demonstrated amid the ongoing conflict.
China’s strategic interest in Iran also extends to its broader geopolitical rivalry with the United States. Analysts believe that prolonged US engagement in Middle East conflicts could divert resources and attention away from Asia, particularly from the Taiwan issue. Since Taiwan relies heavily on US military support for its defence, any shift in American strategic focus could indirectly benefit China.
For Beijing, Iran therefore represents a crucial partner not only for energy security but also for maintaining influence in the Middle East and shaping the broader global power balance.
