JD Vance Defends ICE Agent, Links Deadly Minnesota Shooting to Far-Left Ideology

US Vice President JD Vance on Thursday blamed far-left ideology for a deadly shooting in Minnesota during an Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) operation, sparking political and media backlash. Speaking from the White House briefing room, Vance suggested the woman involved may have attempted to obstruct what he described as a legitimate law enforcement action and questioned how she became aware of the operation. He indicated investigators would examine whether broader networks were involved.

Vance sharply criticised media coverage of the incident, calling it biased and dangerous. He described the shooting as an attack on law and order and accused the press of endangering law enforcement officers through its reporting. Referring to the victim by name, Vance said she was a victim of left-wing ideology, questioning her decision to confront ICE officers.

The Vice President reaffirmed the administration’s strong support for ICE and announced plans to nominate a new assistant attorney general to prosecute abuse of government assistance programmes, initially focusing on Minnesota. He said Senate Majority Leader John Thune had promised a swift confirmation process.

The White House echoed Vance’s stance. Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt said the administration fully supports ICE and condemned what she described as a dangerous left-wing movement targeting law enforcement. She added that the Department of Homeland Security would continue operations and fraud investigations in Minnesota.

Minnesota Governor Tim Walz offered a contrasting response, urging President Donald Trump to lower tensions and allow the investigation to proceed. Calling for compassion and restraint, Walz said Minnesotans needed space to grieve, describing the ongoing political attacks on the state as cruel and exhausting.
