Three iconic Buddhist heritage sites from Odisha—Ratnagiri, Udayagiri and Lalitgiri—have been added to India’s tentative list for UNESCO World Heritage recognition. Collectively referred to as the Diamond Triangle, the sites represent the historical spread and development of all three major schools of Buddhism: Hinayana, Mahayana and Vajrayana.
The Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) prepared and submitted the nomination dossier to UNESCO around eight months ago, confirming that it met the organisation’s operational guidelines. The World Heritage Centre has now formally acknowledged the inclusion of the serial nomination on India’s tentative list.
Officials noted that placement on the tentative list is a prerequisite for any future inscription on the World Heritage List. Rich in ancient monasteries, stupas, sculptures and relics, the Diamond Triangle sites highlight Odisha’s significant role in Buddhist history. With this addition, India now has 70 sites on its tentative list, including other Odisha landmarks such as Ekamra Kshetra and Chilika Lake.
