The dispute surfaced after two women claimed ownership of the same goat. According to the complaint, Monalisa Das of Sanata village alleged that her goat had gone missing a month ago and was later traced to the house of Karuna, a relative of another claimant, in the Gudi Khandia area. This led to a heated argument between the two parties, prompting police intervention.
Monalisa claimed the goat belongs to her and said she has been visiting the police station regularly to feed it. “I have not eaten since last night. The goat is pregnant and responds when I call her by name,” she said.
However, the second claimant, Mama Bindhani, accused Monalisa of stealing the goat in her absence. “She took my goat when I was not at home. Villagers also confirmed this,” she told the police.
To resolve the matter, police released the goat in the presence of both claimants, hoping it would identify its owner. However, when the animal failed to respond to either, it was brought back to the police station. Officers even checked the food brought for the goat to rule out any foul play.
Police have now given both parties three days to produce valid proof of ownership. “Since neither side has produced concrete evidence, we have asked them to submit documents within three days,” said SDPO Pramod Kumar Malik.
