Thalapathy Vijay’s much-anticipated farewell filmJana Nayagan, initially slated for a January 9 theatrical release, remains stalled due to an unresolved legal dispute with the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC). On January 20, the Madras High Court heard arguments from both parties and reserved its order, without indicating when a verdict might be delivered. As a result, the film has officially missed the crucial Republic Day holiday window.
The uncertainty has placed the makers, KVN Productions, under severe pressure. During the hearing, the production house highlighted the massive financial stakes involved, revealing an investment of approximately Rs 500 crore. They also informed the court that Amazon Prime Video had issued a legal threat on December 31 over the continued delay and lack of clarity regarding the film’s release timeline.
With the case not listed for hearing immediately, industry attention has now shifted to January 27 as the next possible date for court proceedings. Meanwhile, theatre owners and exhibitors are considering February 6 or February 13 as alternative release dates. With no major Tamil releases lined up in February and the Sankranti rush in Telugu cinema tapering off,Jana Nayagancould still secure a strong box office run if released early next month.
However, time remains a critical factor due to the upcoming Tamil Nadu Assembly Elections. Reports suggest that the Election Commission of India may announce the election schedule in the third week of February. Once the Model Code of Conduct comes into effect, the film could face additional scrutiny, especially given Vijay’s political involvement through his party, Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK). Authorities could potentially restrict screenings if the film is deemed to influence voters, making an early February release crucial.
Directed by H Vinoth,Jana Nayaganfeatures an ensemble cast including Vijay, Pooja Hegde, Bobby Deol, Priyamani and Prakash Raj, and is positioned as a significant cinematic and political milestone in the actor’s career.
