The Supreme Court of India has sought a detailed report from the Odisha government regarding a fatal road accident that occurred in Ganjam district earlier this year.
The Supreme Court Road Safety Committee has asked the state authorities to submit a comprehensive report on the accident that took place on the National Highway near Haladiapadar in Berhampur in January.
The apex court has directed that the report be submitted by March 5. It has also instructed the state government to outline the safety measures proposed to prevent similar accidents in the future.
The tragic incident occurred on January 31, when at least five people lost their lives after being hit by a truck on a busy stretch of the highway. Several others were reportedly injured in the mishap, which sparked widespread public concern and debate over road safety standards.
Taking a serious view of the matter, the Supreme Court Road Safety Committee emphasized the need for strict enforcement of traffic regulations and improved highway safety mechanisms. The committee is expected to review the state government’s findings and assess whether adequate preventive and corrective steps are being implemented.
The incident has once again brought focus to the urgent need for stronger road safety enforcement, better monitoring of heavy vehicles, and improved infrastructure to prevent recurring tragedies on national highways.
