A political controversy has erupted in Delhi after the BJP demanded the arrest of Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) MLA and Leader of the Opposition Atishi over alleged derogatory remarks about a Sikh Guru, charges she has strongly denied. The AAP dismissed the allegations as a distraction from a stalled debate in the Assembly on Delhi’s air pollution.
Senior BJP leaders, led by former MP Ramesh Bidhuri, filed a police complaint on Wednesday, claiming that Atishi made offensive comments against Guru Tegh Bahadur in a video circulated on social media on January 7. The party described the remarks as deliberate, abusive, and deeply hurtful to the sentiments of the Sikh community.
The complaint alleged that the comments were made "intentionally and in full consciousness," warning that such statements could inflame emotions and disturb communal harmony. BJP leaders sought the immediate registration of an FIR and Atishi’s arrest under relevant legal provisions.
Speaking to the media, Bidhuri said the remarks had "hurt the sentiments of Sikh brothers and sisters" and demanded strict legal action. Other BJP leaders argued that no public representative should be allowed to insult religious figures.
The BJP has also taken the issue beyond Delhi. Delhi Minister Manjinder Singh Sirsa, along with MLAs Arvinder Singh Lovely and Kailash Gahlot, is scheduled to visit Amritsar on Thursday to raise the matter before the Sri Akal Takht Sahib.
Chief Minister Rekha Gupta on Wednesday accused Atishi of making a "shameful and indecent" comment on a Sikh Guru during proceedings in the Delhi Assembly and urged Speaker Vijender Gupta to take action. BJP MLAs have also demanded the cancellation of Atishi’s Assembly membership.
The controversy traces back to a special discussion in the Assembly on a three-day event organised by the Delhi government in November to mark the 350th martyrdom anniversary of Guru Tegh Bahadur. BJP lawmakers alleged that Atishi showed disrespect to the Sikh Guru during the debate.
AAP Response
Atishi rejected the allegations, calling them fabricated. In a video statement on X, she said her remarks were about the BJP avoiding a discussion on pollution while staging protests over stray dogs in the Assembly.
She accused the BJP of deliberately adding a false subtitle and inserting Guru Tegh Bahadur’s name into the video to misrepresent her comments. Atishi added that she comes from a family with Sikh traditions and would never insult a Sikh Guru.
Punjab Chief Minister and senior AAP leader Bhagwant Mann also condemned the BJP, accusing it of being "anti-Punjab and anti-Sikh." Mann claimed that words were falsely inserted into Atishi’s video to malign her and demanded that the BJP apologise to the Sikh community and the people of Punjab. He added that politics based on religion and hatred would not succeed in Punjab.
