Kandhamal Elephant Death Case: All Guilty Will Be Punished, Says Odisha Forest Minister

Reacting to the shocking elephant death incident in Kandhamal district, Odisha Forest and Environment Minister Ganesh Ram Singh Khuntia said the department is acting with urgency. Ten people have been arrested so far, investigation teams formed, and strict action promised against all guilty, including officials involved in the alleged cover-up.

The Odisha Forest and Environment Department has swung into action following the disturbing elephant death incident in Kandhamal district. Forest and Environment Minister Ganesh Ram Singh Khuntia on Monday said that the matter is being treated with utmost seriousness and that all those found guilty will be brought to justice without exception.

The Minister informed that investigation teams have been constituted as per legal procedures, and strict action will be taken based on their findings. He confirmed that the JCB machine allegedly used to bury the elephant carcass has been seized and ten people have already been arrested in connection with the case.

Assistant Conservators of Forests (ACFs) are conducting the investigation under established rules and regulations. The Minister also warned that any forest official who knowingly allowed or participated in the incident, as well as anti-social elements within the department, would face stern departmental and legal action.

Earlier, a major revelation emerged in the Belghar elephant death case after senior forest officials disclosed that the elephant carcass was cut into 32 pieces to evade departmental action. The disclosure was made by Berhampur Regional Chief Conservator of Forests (RCCF) Vishwanath Neelannavar during a press conference.

According to the RCCF, a suspended deputy ranger, identified as Binaya Bisi, allegedly orchestrated the dismemberment after the elephant died due to electrocution. To avoid disciplinary proceedings, the body parts were reportedly buried at different locations to conceal evidence. The RCCF added that the squad members involved were misled by the deputy ranger, who claimed that senior officials had been informed.
