Sambalpur Police Bust Major Gambling Racket, 9 Arrested, Rs 6 Lakh Recovered
A major gambling racket was unearthed in Sambalpur on Saturday after Dhanupali police conducted a surprise raid at a hotel. Nine people were caught gambling in a hotel room when the police intercepted the operation mid-way.
Police said a substantial amount of money was involved in the game. During the raid, the gamblers panicked and attempted to destroy evidence by throwing cash into the toilet. However, the police quickly recovered the money. Around Rs 6 lakh in cash and several mobile phones were seized.
Repeat Offenders Under Scrutiny
All nine detainees are seasoned gamblers with prior records. Acting on instructions from the Superintendent of Police, Dhanupali police tracked their movements and raided the hotel based on specific intelligence.
Questions Over Hotel Owner’s Role
The incident has raised questions about the hotel owner’s role. Police noted that food was repeatedly ordered to the room during the gambling session. The owner, however, denied any involvement, claiming he had no prior knowledge and did not receive any commission from the activity.
Investigation Ongoing
Authorities are interrogating the nine accused and investigating how such a large gathering went unnoticed. Further action will be taken based on the investigation, which aims to uncover any wider links to the illegal operation.
