Police have detained two persons in connection with the deadly explosion at an illegal stone quarry in Motanga Gopalpur area of Dhenkanal district that claimed the lives of two labourers. Preliminary findings indicate that blasting operations were being carried out without valid permission, in violation of mining and safety norms.

Police have intensified their investigation into the fatal explosion at an illegal stone quarry in Motanga Gopalpur area of Dhenkanal district, detaining two persons in connection with the incident that claimed the lives of two labourers.

The detained individuals include a blasting operator, Chhabindra Mahakud, and one of his associates. Both are currently being interrogated to ascertain the circumstances that led to the explosion and to identify others who may be involved in the illegal quarry operations.

According to preliminary findings, the quarry did not have valid permission to carry out blasting activities. Officials revealed that mining operations and the use of explosives were being conducted illegally, in clear violation of prescribed mining laws and safety regulations. The absence of mandatory approvals and safety measures is believed to have directly contributed to the tragic incident.

The explosion resulted in the instantaneous death of two workers engaged in mining-related activities at the site. The incident has sparked serious concern over the prevalence of illegal quarrying practices in the region and the safety of labourers working under hazardous conditions.

Earlier, the Director of Mining and Minerals visited the blast site and conducted a ground-level inspection to assess compliance with mining regulations, availability of safety equipment, and the overall legality of the quarry’s operations. A detailed report based on the inspection is expected to be submitted to the state authorities.

Police officials said further details are likely to emerge during the interrogation of the detained persons. Authorities are also probing the possible involvement of additional individuals linked to the illegal quarry activities.
