One Year After Demolition, Odisha Bhawan Reconstruction Yet to Begin in New Delhi

More than a year after the demolition of Odisha Bhawan in New Delhi over safety concerns, reconstruction work remains stalled. The delay has raised questions over administrative planning and mounting public expenditure as state dignitaries are being accommodated in hotels at government cost.

Over a year has passed since the demolition of Odisha Bhawan in New Delhi, yet reconstruction of the new building has not commenced, triggering concerns over administrative delays and financial implications.

The old structure was razed after it was officially declared beyond economic repair and unsafe for habitation. In a report dated April 28, 2024, the Chief Engineer-cum-Additional Secretary of the Works Department noted that the building had deteriorated to such an extent that restoration was no longer viable. Acting on these recommendations, the Odisha Home Department formally declared the Bhawan unsafe and authorised its demolition.

Despite these formal decisions, there has been little visible progress on rebuilding the much-anticipated new Odisha Bhawan. Observers note that only basic land-levelling work has been undertaken at the site so far, with no major construction activity evident even after a year.

The delay has sparked criticism from various quarters, particularly in light of the financial burden on the state exchequer. In the absence of a functional Odisha Bhawan, ministers, officials, and dignitaries from Odisha visiting the national capital are reportedly being accommodated at The Ashok Hotel. Their stay is funded by the state government, adding to public expenditure.

The prolonged inaction has raised questions about project planning, execution timelines, and administrative accountability. Stakeholders and observers are seeking clarity on when construction of the new Odisha Bhawan will begin and the projected timeline for its completion.
