Odisha Government Invites Proposals for Formation of New Districts

The Odisha government has invited proposals for the creation of new districts in the 2026–27 financial year. Revenue Minister Suresh Pujari informed the State Legislative Assembly that 31 memoranda demanding new districts have already been received and are under consideration.

The government of Odisha has invited proposals for the formation of new districts during the 2026–27 financial year, Revenue Minister Suresh Pujari informed the State Legislative Assembly in a written reply on Thursday.

Responding to a query in the House, the Minister stated that the government is open to examining proposals for the creation of new districts, provided they are formally submitted. He clarified that any proposal received will be reviewed strictly in accordance with established administrative norms, feasibility criteria, and other relevant considerations before a final decision is taken.

According to the written reply, the state government has already received memoranda demanding the formation of 31 new districts from various regions across Odisha. These submissions are currently under examination by the authorities.

However, the Minister did not specify a timeline for approval or implementation of any proposed new districts.

The demand for new districts has gained momentum in recent years, with several regions arguing that smaller administrative units would enhance governance efficiency. Proponents believe that restructuring district boundaries could facilitate faster implementation of welfare schemes, improve law-and-order management, ensure better delivery of public services, and strengthen decentralised administration.

The Minister reiterated that the government will take a decision at an appropriate time after carefully evaluating administrative convenience, financial implications, infrastructure requirements, and overall public interest.
