Severe Cold Wave Tightens Grip on Odisha as Cuttack and Rourkela Record Historic Low Temperatures

Odisha is reeling under one of the harshest winter spells in recent years as a severe cold wave sweeps across the state, disrupting daily life and pushing temperatures to record lows. The Twin Cities—Bhubaneswar and Cuttack—along with northern and western regions, have been particularly affected.

Rourkela recorded a minimum temperature of 3.6°C, placing it among the coldest cities in the country. Cuttack also witnessed an unusual plunge in temperatures, dropping to 8.9°C and surpassing its previous low of 8.5°C recorded in January 2004. Residents reported icy winds and dense morning fog, adding to the discomfort.

In the state capital, Bhubaneswar, the chilling conditions intensified as dense fog engulfed the city. The temperature dropped to 10°C around 5:30 am, with the minimum settling at 10.2°C.

Northern Odisha experienced even harsher conditions, with Mayurbhanj district reporting sub-zero temperatures, highlighting the severity of the cold wave across the region.

The India Meteorological Department has indicated that the cold wave conditions will continue until at least January 11, with no significant warming expected. Residents have been urged to take necessary precautions during early morning and night hours as Odisha endures a prolonged and unforgiving winter.
