Neeraj Chopra splits with coach Jan Zelezny after World Championship flop show

India’s star javelin thrower Neeraj Chopra has parted ways with legendary coach Jan Zelezny after one season together. Both announced the split through a joint statement, expressing mutual admiration and respect.

Under Zelezny, Chopra began on a high, surpassing the 90-metre mark in their first competition together at the Doha Diamond League, cementing his place among the global elite. However, his performances were mixed, with his final outing under Zelezny being an eighth-place finish at the 2025 World Athletics Championship in Tokyo, ending a seven-year international medal streak.

Reflecting on the partnership, Chopra praised Zelezny for expanding his technical understanding and introducing new training methods. “Working with Jan opened my eyes to so many new ideas. He is not only the best javelin thrower of all time but also one of the best human beings I have met,” Chopra said. Zelezny echoed the sentiments, highlighting Chopra’s progress, including breaking the 90-metre barrier, and praised his potential for the future.

Looking ahead, Chopra plans to take charge of his own coaching strategy, drawing on lessons from previous mentors. He has already begun preparations for 2026, with an eye on the 2027 World Championships and the 2028 Olympics.

In a separate development, Chopra has also ended his decade-long association with JSW Sports to launch his own athlete management venture, Vel Sports, marking the start of a new chapter in his professional career.
