Odisha Municipal Elections Likely by End of June, Says State Election Commissioner

Municipal elections in Odisha are expected to be held by the end of June, with polling to cover newly declared urban local bodies across the state. State Election Commissioner Madhusudan Padhi said preparations are underway to meet the mandatory six-month deadline.

Municipal elections in Odisha are set to be conducted by the end of June this year, State Election Commissioner Madhusudan Padhi announced on Wednesday. The polls will be held in newly notified urban local bodies, including Notified Area Councils (NACs) and municipalities, in compliance with statutory election timelines.

To assess ground-level preparedness, the State Election Commissioner recently convened a review meeting at the Ganjam District Council conference hall. Senior officials discussed election logistics, administrative arrangements and measures required to ensure a smooth and transparent polling process.

As per election norms, polls must be completed within six months of the declaration of any municipal area. The Odisha government had issued notifications for 24 new NACs and municipalities on December 31, making it mandatory to complete elections within the stipulated period. Officials confirmed that election results will be declared by the end of June, followed by the first council meetings of the newly elected urban bodies.

Padhi said the State Election Commission has formally written to the state government, stressing the need to complete delimitation and reservation exercises in a time-bound manner. Once these processes are finalised, the preparation of electoral rolls will begin, paving the way for the formal election schedule.
