Unidentified miscreants allegedly looted cash after vandalising an HDFC Bank ATM near Mainda Chhak under Binjharpur police limits in Odisha’s Jajpur district late Thursday night. The perpetrators reportedly broke open the ATM unit and escaped with cash and parts of the machine.
According to preliminary information, the incident took place during late-night hours when the area was largely deserted. Local residents noticed the damaged ATM early Friday morning and immediately informed the police. Upon reaching the spot, officers found the ATM severely damaged, suggesting forced entry.
Police officials said the accused appear to have removed the cash cassette from the ATM and may have attempted to carry away other machine components. The exact amount of money stolen is yet to be confirmed, pending verification from bank authorities.
Investigators are also probing reports that a goods auto-rickshaw parked near the ATM was stolen around the same time. It is suspected that the vehicle may have been used to transport the looted cash and equipment.
CCTV footage from nearby establishments and traffic points is being examined to identify the suspects. Forensic teams have collected evidence from the site, including tool marks and other physical clues.
A case has been registered, and police said multiple angles are being investigated, including the possibility of an organised gang’s involvement. Security measures at other ATM kiosks in the area have been strengthened as a precaution.
