India spinner Varun Chakravarthy is being hailed as one of the most lethal bowlers in the ongoing T20 World Cup 2026, with former cricketer Kris Srikkanth claiming that he is currently more effective than Jasprit Bumrah for the Indian team. Chakravarthy has taken nine wickets in four matches at an astonishing average of 6.88 and an economy rate of 5.16. Against the Netherlands, he delivered a stellar performance, finishing with three wickets for just 14 runs in three overs.
Speaking on his YouTube channel, Srikkanth praised Varun’s deceptive bowling, noting the spinner’s variety of deliveries including sharp googlies, subtle changes in pace, and deliveries that seem unplayable to batters. He pointed out that Varun doesn’t get enough recognition despite consistently taking key top-order wickets, even suggesting he was overlooked for the Player of the Match award against the Netherlands, which went to Shivam Dube.
Srikkanth called Varun a “modern-day T20I great,” comparing his current impact to what Bumrah achieved in T20Is a few years ago. He highlighted the bowler’s consistency and ability to restrict runs while picking wickets, adding that Chakravarthy could be a strong contender for Player of the Tournament if India wins the T20 World Cup 2026. India will next face South Africa in the Super 8 clash on February 22, where Varun is expected to continue his match-winning performances.
