Manchester United midfielder Kobbie Mainoo returned to training on Tuesday, providing a timely boost ahead of United’s Premier League clash with Burnley at Turf Moor.
The 20-year-old had been sidelined since mid-December due to a calf injury, missing matches against Newcastle, Wolverhampton, and Leeds. His last appearance came as a substitute in the 4-4 draw with Bournemouth on December 15. While Mainoo’s return puts him in contention, a final decision on his availability will be made closer to kick-off.
United’s preparations have been overshadowed by off-field developments, including the departure of head coach Ruben Amorim earlier this week. Amorim, who guided the club to last season’s UEFA Europa League final, left after 14 months in charge following reported tensions with the board. Former midfielder and academy coach Darren Fletcher has stepped in as interim manager and oversaw Tuesday’s session.
“Kobbie trained today, but we’ll see how he comes through tomorrow to decide whether he’s going to be in the squad,” Fletcher told MUTV.
United are also set to regain key midfielders Bruno Fernandes and Mason Mount, both returning from injury. However, the squad remains without defenders Matthijs de Ligt and Harry Maguire, and several players are still on international duty at the Africa Cup of Nations.
As United navigate a new chapter under interim management, Mainoo’s potential return could bring much-needed energy and stability to the midfield as the club looks to steady its Premier League campaign.
