Tehran:Iran’s powerfulAssembly of Expertshas reportedly reached a majority consensus on selecting the country’s nextSupreme Leaderfollowing the death ofAyatollah Ali Khamenei, though the identity of the successor has not yet been officially revealed.
According to Iranian media reports, members of the clerical body responsible for choosing the country’s top authority have largely agreed on a candidate. However, certain procedural and security issues have delayed the formal announcement.
Assembly memberAyatollah Mohammadmehdi Mirbaqericonfirmed that the panel had reached a majority view but said some obstacles still needed to be resolved before the decision could be publicly declared.
Reports suggest there is some disagreement within the88-member Assembly of Expertsabout how the final decision should be formalised.
Some members believe that anin-person meetingof the assembly is necessary to officially confirm the appointment. Others argue that such a gathering may not be feasible due to the current security situation.
ClericAyatollah Mohsen Heidari Alekasirsaid holding a plenary meeting of the assembly would be difficult under the present circumstances.
He described the situation as extraordinary and warned that attempts to disrupt the leadership selection process would benefit Iran’s enemies.
The process of selecting a new Supreme Leader comes at a time whenIran is facing ongoing military conflict involving the United States and Israel.
Since the war began onFebruary 28, multiple airstrikes have reportedly killed several Iranian officials and military commanders, including Ayatollah Khamenei.
Iranian media also reported that a building associated with theAssembly of Experts in Qomwas damaged in airstrikes earlier in the conflict.
Iranian clerics involved in the selection process said the candidate was chosen in line with the late leader’s advice regarding the qualities required for the position.
According to Heidari Alekasir, the new leader should be someonestrongly opposed by Iran’s adversaries rather than praised by them, reflecting Khamenei’s long-standing approach to leadership.
Speculation has also focused onMojtaba Khamenei, the son of the late Supreme Leader, as a possible successor.
The 56-year-old cleric is known to have strong connections withIran’s Revolutionary Guardsand has long been considered an influential figure within Iran’s political and religious establishment.
Although he has never held a formal government position beyond working in his father’s office, Mojtaba has been widely viewed as a potential successor for several years.
However, officials have not confirmed whether he is the candidate chosen by the Assembly of Experts.
The final announcement of Iran’s next Supreme Leader is expected once procedural issues are resolved.
