Canberra, Feb 19: A disturbing incident of alleged racial violence against an Indian national has surfaced in Australia, drawing sharp reactions online. A 22-year-old Indian nurse, identified as Harmanpreet Singh, was reportedly attacked in Geelong city after being subjected to racist remarks by a group of locals.
According to reports, Singh, who works at a hospital in Australia, was leaving a gym when three individuals allegedly began mocking him and making derogatory comments. Despite initially ignoring the taunts and heading inside the gym, the situation escalated later.
Local media reports indicate that the accused individuals waited outside the gym and confronted Singh when he came out. He was allegedly physically assaulted, resulting in severe injuries and heavy bleeding from his face. During the attack, the assailants reportedly used racially offensive slurs and abused him.
Singh stated that the attackers arrived in a grey sedan and fled after the incident. He managed to reach a hospital on his own, where doctors reportedly advised surgery for facial injuries. He is expected to remain hospitalized for several days.
The victim has also claimed that this was not the first time he faced racial discrimination, adding that repeated incidents have left him mentally shaken and fearful about his safety.
Family members have expressed deep concern over the attack. Singh’s sister said the family is traumatized and living in fear, urging authorities to arrest the culprits at the earliest.
The incident has once again raised questions about the safety of Indian nationals abroad and the need for stronger action against racially motivated violence.
