Former India captain Sunil Gavaskar has praised Shivam Dube’s rapid development, stating that the Mumbai all-rounder is no longer just a late-order power-hitter but a dependable T20I asset capable of influencing matches in multiple roles. Gavaskar’s comments came after India’s 50-run defeat to New Zealand in the fourth T20I in Vizag, a game that showcased Dube’s adaptability under pressure.
Unlike his cameo role in Raipur, where he scored a quick 36 off 18 balls to finish the chase, Dube walked in far earlier in Vizag with India reeling at 63 for four. With Rinku Singh dismissed soon after, Dube was left without reliable partners, yet responded with fearless intent, launching a massive first-ball six and keeping India’s hopes alive.
Speaking on Star Sports, Gavaskar highlighted how Dube handled the situation with maturity and confidence. Often regarded as a spin specialist, Dube proved equally destructive against pace, racing to a 15-ball half-century — the third-fastest by an Indian in T20 internationals. He eventually smashed 65 off just 23 deliveries, including seven sixes, dragging India from a precarious position into contention before being run out.
Beyond his batting, Gavaskar emphasised Dube’s growing value as a bowling option. The left-arm medium pacer has steadily improved, taking 20 wickets in 36 matches over the past three years and contributing crucial overs in high-pressure games, including the Asia Cup 2025 final against Pakistan. In the ongoing New Zealand series, he has claimed three wickets from six overs.
While India fell short in Vizag, Dube’s ability to bat under pressure and contribute with the ball has strengthened his case as a genuine all-rounder. With the T20 World Cup approaching, his rise offers India much-needed balance and flexibility in the middle order.
