The Indian government has directed domestic oil refiners to maximise the production of liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) to ensure sufficient supply for households and essential sectors. The move comes amid concerns over global energy supply disruptions and rising demand for cooking gas.

Authorities have also instructed refiners to sell the additional LPG output exclusively to the country’s three major state-run fuel retailers —Indian Oil Corporation (IOC),Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited (BPCL)andHindustan Petroleum Corporation Limited (HPCL). These companies are responsible for distributing cooking gas to millions of households across India.

The directive aims to strengthen the domestic supply chain and prevent shortages at a time when global energy markets are experiencing volatility due to geopolitical tensions. By prioritising supplies to these public sector companies, the government hopes to maintain stable LPG availability and control price pressures for consumers.

Industry experts say the decision could help India manage domestic demand more effectively, especially if international LPG supplies become constrained due to ongoing global conflicts and shipping disruptions.
