England’s Ashes ordeal worsened on Day 4 of the fifth Test in Sydney after captain Ben Stokes was forced to leave the field with a groin injury, adding to the mounting concerns on a punishing tour for the visitors.
Stokes began the day by bowling the opening over at the Sydney Cricket Ground but managed only ten deliveries before breaking down in his follow-through and clutching his right groin. Clearly in discomfort, the England skipper walked off the field and headed straight to the dressing room, with vice-captain Harry Brook stepping in to lead the side on the field.
An England team statement later confirmed the issue. “Ben Stokes is currently being assessed for a right adductor complaint. We will provide an update when more information is available,” it said. Jacob Bethell was called upon to complete the over, highlighting how abruptly England were left to adjust.
The injury is the latest setback in a series that England effectively lost after defeats in the opening three Tests. After Australia posted a commanding 567 in their first innings in Sydney, Stokes’ side are now battling to avoid a 4–1 series loss, with injuries continuing to undermine any hopes of regaining momentum.
For Stokes, a serious injury would be a bitter conclusion to a tour that has exacted a heavy physical and emotional toll. Ahead of the series in Perth, the 34-year-old had spoken of his desire to join the select group of England captains to win an Ashes series in Australia. By the time the tour reached Sydney, he acknowledged it had been “a tough one,” defined by defeats, form struggles, injuries and off-field distractions.
Stokes has carried a heavy workload throughout the series. His spell in Sydney marked his 28th over of Australia’s innings, taking his tally to 101.1 overs across the tour — his second-highest workload in a single Test series since 2018. Given his recent history of knee, hamstring and shoulder problems, concerns about his physical durability had already been building.
England’s injury troubles have been extensive. Mark Wood was ruled out after the first Test due to a knee issue, Jofra Archer sustained a side strain during the series, and Gus Atkinson missed the Sydney Test with a hamstring injury. Pace bowling was expected to be England’s key weapon, but instead it has emerged as a persistent weakness.
Despite the setbacks, Stokes has reaffirmed his commitment to continue as England’s Test captain. He signed a contract extension ahead of the Ashes that runs through the home series in 2027. England’s next Test assignment is against New Zealand in June, though Stokes’ availability will now hinge on the outcome of his injury assessment.
