Panic broke out at Balakati market in Balianta, on the outskirts of Bhubaneswar, Saturday night after a car, allegedly driven by an intoxicated driver, crashed into the crowded market at high speed, damaging at least seven motorcycles and several shops.
The incident occurred near the Balakati market auto stand on Saradeipur–Nimapada road. Eyewitnesses reported that the car, bearing registration number OD 02 CW 8303, was speeding when the driver lost control and veered into a row of parked motorcycles and shop fronts.
As Saturday is the weekly market day, the area was crowded with shoppers and vendors. Fortunately, no casualties were reported, as people managed to move away just before the crash.
Local residents and shopkeepers detained the driver on the spot, and in anger over the reckless driving, some even vandalised the vehicle, creating a tense scene. Police later arrived to control the situation and begin an investigation, with preliminary findings suggesting the driver was under the influence of alcohol.
The crash caused significant financial losses to shopkeepers and motorcycle owners. Locals have demanded strict action against the driver and stronger enforcement to prevent drunk driving in busy market areas. The incident has once again highlighted concerns over road safety and irresponsible driving in public spaces.
