Cooking gas prices in India have been raised significantly as global energy markets react to escalating tensions in West Asia. Oil marketing companies increased the price of domestic LPG cylinders by Rs 60, while commercial LPG cylinders used by restaurants, hotels, and other businesses have become costlier by around Rs 115. The revised rates came into effect from March 7.
According to data from Indian Oil Corporation, a 14.2-kg non-subsidised domestic LPG cylinder now costs around Rs 913 in Delhi, up from Rs 853 earlier. Prices vary slightly across cities due to local taxes and VAT. In major cities, the revised prices are approximately Rs 912.50 in Mumbai, Rs 939 in Kolkata, and Rs 928.50 in Chennai.
The increase is largely linked to rising global energy prices following geopolitical tensions and military developments in the Middle East, particularly involving Iran. The region is a crucial hub for global oil and gas supplies, and any disruption in shipping routes or production can quickly affect fuel prices worldwide.
Commercial LPG cylinders, commonly used by hotels, restaurants, and small businesses, have also seen a significant jump in prices. In Delhi, the price of a 19-kg commercial cylinder has risen to about Rs 1,883. Officials say the adjustment reflects higher international energy costs and supply uncertainties linked to the conflict.
Despite the hike, government officials maintain that LPG prices in India remain relatively lower compared with several neighbouring countries. Meanwhile, beneficiaries of the Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana will continue to receive a subsidy of Rs 300 per cylinder for up to 12 refills annually.
