Customs officials on Tuesday seized marijuana worth an estimated Rs 4 crore at the Biju Patnaik International Airport in Bhubaneswar during routine security checks, triggering suspicion that the contraband was intended for circulation ahead of New Year celebrations.

According to sources, one person arriving on an international flight has been detained in connection with the seizure and is currently being interrogated.

The seizure was made during the inspection of a passenger’s baggage. Acting on specific intelligence inputs, Customs officials intercepted the consignment and recovered a large quantity of marijuana concealed inside the luggage.

Suspected New Year Supply Chain

Sources said preliminary findings indicate that the seized marijuana was meant for distribution during Zero Night celebrations. Customs officials had received confidential inputs regarding the possible movement of narcotics through the airport, following which checks were intensified.

Initial investigation revealed that the detained passenger had arrived in Bhubaneswar on an IndiGo flight from Bangkok. Investigators are examining the individual’s travel history and possible links to a wider drug trafficking network. During questioning, it reportedly emerged that the consignment was to be transported by road to an undisclosed location after arrival.

The identity of the detained individual has not been disclosed. Further investigation is underway to ascertain the source and intended destination of the narcotics.

Heightened Vigil Ahead of Zero Night

The seizure comes amid heightened security arrangements in Bhubaneswar ahead of New Year celebrations. The Commissionerate Police have placed the city under increased surveillance and announced a zero-tolerance approach to violations during Zero Night.

Police officials said extensive checking, continuous patrolling and the deployment of additional forces are underway across the city to prevent illegal activities, including drug trafficking. Authorities added that enforcement agencies are coordinating closely to monitor air, road and public movement during the festive period.
