Bitter Cold Hits Mayurbhanj: Temperature Plunges to -2°C

Mayurbhanj experiences a significant drop in temperature, reaching a bone-chilling -2°C, leaving residents bracing for the cold.

Mayurbhanj district is currently experiencing an intense spell of winter as temperatures have consistently remained below zero degrees Celsius for the past two days. On Thursday, the mercury dropped to -1°C, and by Friday morning, it plunged further to -2°C, marking one of the coldest periods in recent times. The biting cold has not only affected daily life but also brought snowfall to several parts of Simlipal National Park, adding a picturesque yet harsh element to the region’s winter landscape.

The extreme chill is being felt across multiple areas of the district, including Karanjia, Shukruli, Rarua, Jashipur, and Thakurmunda, along with the villages and forested areas surrounding Simlipal. Residents have reported difficulty in carrying out routine activities as the frost and sub-zero temperatures create slippery roads and icy conditions.

According to the Regional Chief Conservator of Forests (RCCF), early morning recordings showed Upper Barakamuda in Simlipal registering the lowest temperature at -2°C, while Chahala recorded 2°C and Gudigudi 1°C. Authorities have advised people to take necessary precautions to stay warm, especially the elderly and children, as such extreme cold can lead to health risks including hypothermia and frostbite. The meteorological department has attributed this cold wave to a strong flow of cold northwesterly winds combined with clear skies, which has intensified the winter chill in the region.

The current weather pattern serves as a reminder of the severe winter conditions that Mayurbhanj can experience, particularly in forested and hilly areas, where temperatures often dip lower than in the surrounding plains. Residents are preparing for continued cold in the coming days, and local administrations are on alert to provide relief and ensure that essential services remain operational amid the freezing conditions.
