BCCI vice president and Congress Rajya Sabha MP Rajeev Shukla has criticised the participation of Indian Chief Ministers at the ongoing World Economic Forum (WEF) in Davos, Switzerland, calling it a “status symbol” and a “show off.” He described the signing of MoUs with Indian companies abroad as “strange” and a “criminal waste of money,” pointing out that such agreements could easily have been executed in India.
Shukla tweeted, “It's strange. Indians are going to Davos to meet Indians. State governments are signing agreements with Indian companies in Switzerland which they could have done in India. CMs are meeting CMs in Davos. It's a criminal waste of money. If they had signed agreements with foreign companies there I would have understood.”
He added in a follow-up tweet: “It's World Economic Forum or India Economic Forum. There are seven Indian chief ministers meeting each other in Davos. Indian companies are meeting Indian companies. Which they could have easily done in India. Actually, it has become a status symbol or show off to go to Davos.”
Shukla’s remarks come after similar criticism from his Congress colleagues, who questioned Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis for signing MoUs with Indian firms in Switzerland. Congress leaders Vijay Wadettiwar and Varsha Gaikwad questioned the benefit of such agreements abroad and the use of taxpayers’ money. Veteran Congress MP Jairam Ramesh also criticised Fadnavis for signing a deal with a company owned by a minister in the Maharashtra cabinet, calling the event “bizarre.”
Fadnavis, who is attending the five-day WEF annual meeting, signed 19 MoUs worth Rs 14.5 lakh crore with commitments to create over 15 lakh jobs on the first day, including deals with Singaporean firms for the Mumbai 3.0 mission. Other Indian Chief Ministers attending include Jharkhand’s Hemant Soren and Andhra Pradesh’s N. Chandrababu Naidu, alongside global business leaders, politicians, and academicians.
