Diego Garcia military base amid reports of UK blocking US use for potential Iran strike

As Trump Weighs Iran Strike, UK Moves to Block US Use of British Bases.

Amid escalating US-Iran tensions, UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer has reportedly blocked Washington from using British bases, including Diego Garcia and RAF Fairford, for a potential strike on Iran. The move comes as US President Donald Trump considers military options against Tehran.

Amid rising tensions between the United States and Iran, reports indicate that US President Donald Trump is weighing military options for a possible strike against Tehran. However, the United Kingdom has reportedly moved to prevent the United States from using key British military bases for such an operation.

According to a report by The Times, UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer has blocked Washington’s request to use British bases, stating that their use in an attack on Iran could constitute a breach of international law.

Key Bases in Focus

The two bases at the centre of the controversy are Diego Garcia in the Chagos Islands and RAF Fairford in Gloucestershire. Both facilities are strategically significant and host elements of America’s fleet of heavy bombers stationed in Europe.

Under existing agreements, these bases may be used for military operations against third countries only if the operation is discussed and agreed upon in advance with the UK government. The reported refusal marks a significant diplomatic development amid heightened geopolitical tensions.

Trump’s Reaction

Reports suggest that this decision may have influenced Trump’s recent comments on Truth Social, where he criticised the UK’s move to hand over the Chagos Islands to Mauritius under a long-term lease arrangement. Trump argued that such agreements weaken strategic control and emphasised the importance of Diego Garcia in potential military operations.

He indicated that the US may need to use Diego Garcia and RAF Fairford if Iran fails to agree to a nuclear deal with Washington. Trump further stated that the United States would remain ready to support the UK but emphasised the need for strong leadership amid global security challenges.

US-Iran Talks and Military Considerations

As per a report by The Wall Street Journal, Trump is evaluating limited military strikes targeting select Iranian military or government sites as a means of pressuring Tehran into finalising a nuclear agreement.

The development comes after the US and Iran concluded their second round of indirect talks in Geneva, Switzerland, mediated by Oman. While both sides described the discussions as making “progress,” tensions remain high.

Trump recently stated that he would decide on his next course of action regarding Iran within the next ten days. Officials have indicated that if a limited strike fails to yield results, broader measures could be considered.
