Polavaram Dispute: BJD Slams Odisha Govt for ‘Ignoring Malkangiri Tribals’, BJP Hits Back

The Polavaram project once again triggered political tensions in Odisha after the Biju Janata Dal (BJD) launched a sharp attack on the BJP-led government, accusing it of failing to safeguard the interests of Malkangiri’s tribal communities. Speaking at a press conference, senior BJD leader Debi Prasad Mishra alleged that Andhra Pradesh has increased the floodwater release capacity from 36 lakh cusecs to 50 lakh cusecs, while the Odisha government has remained silent despite earlier assurances of intervention.

Mishra alleged that construction activities by the Andhra government are adversely impacting riparian communities in Odisha, and criticised the current “double-engine government” for not holding inter-state discussions as promised by December last year.

Countering the allegations, BJP MP Pradeep Purohit accused the previous BJD-led government of political posturing and failing to take strong, timely decisions when needed. He argued that the BJD is now raising objections merely to maintain its relevance as the Opposition.

The renewed exchange has revived debate on the Polavaram project’s implications for Odisha, with both parties trading accusations over responsibility, accountability, and past inaction.
