110 Kg Ganja Seized on NH-16 in Berhampur, Five Arrested by Excise Department

The Excise Department seized 110 kg of ganja during a raid on NH-16 in Berhampur and arrested five persons involved in the illegal transport. Officials said the contraband was being smuggled from Kandhamal and Gajapati districts to Tamil Nadu.

The Excise Intelligence Department seized 110 kg of ganja and arrested five persons during a major raid conducted along National Highway-16 in Berhampur on Thursday. Officials also confiscated a container truck, two cars, a bike and four mobile phones during the operation.

According to officials, the raid was carried out after receiving specific information about illegal transportation of ganja from Kandhamal and Gajapati districts in Odisha to Tamil Nadu. Acting on the intelligence input, the Excise team conducted coordinated checks at Kanisi and Soral Chhak along NH-16.

During the operation, officers intercepted a container suspected of carrying the contraband. Two cars and a motorcycle that were reportedly escorting the container were also stopped and searched. Upon inspection, officials recovered a total of 110 kg of ganja hidden inside the vehicles.

Authorities said the arrested individuals were allegedly part of a network involved in transporting the banned substance to southern states. The seized vehicles and mobile phones are being examined as part of the investigation.

Excise officials stated that further inquiries are underway to identify other members of the smuggling network and trace possible links in the illegal ganja trade.
