India’s UPI (Unified Payments Interface) has become one of the world’s busiest digital payment systems, handling everything from small daily purchases to large-value business transfers. However, as transaction volumes and values grow, banks are strengthening security measures—especially for high-value payments.
One of the most visible safeguards is IVR (Interactive Voice Response) verification, where banks confirm large transactions through automated phone calls before funds are transferred. According to experts, this added step helps protect users from rising digital fraud.
UPI reached a historic milestone in December 2025, processing 21.6 billion transactions worth nearly Rs 30 trillion. With this scale comes increased exposure to phishing, SIM-swap attacks and social engineering frauds. Industry leaders say IVR helps preserve trust in the system by confirming user intent in real time.
Under updated NPCI guidelines effective September 15, 2025, certain verified UPI transactions—primarily merchant payments—can go up to Rs 5 lakh per transaction and Rs 10 lakh per day, while peer-to-peer transfers remain capped at Rs 1 lakh. Banks determine exact thresholds using RBI norms, internal risk models and customer behaviour analysis.
Fintech experts stress that IVR is not meant to slow payments but to act as a risk-control layer. Banks rely on data points such as transaction size, location changes, spending patterns, merchant category, device behaviour and account history to decide when IVR verification is triggered.
As UPI continues to expand, combining IVR checks with AI-driven fraud detection is becoming essential to ensure the system remains fast, secure and trusted by millions of users.
