The final results of the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) Civil Services Examination 2025 have been announced, but the list includes 348 candidates whose results have been declared as “provisional.” This designation means their selection is temporary and subject to verification of certain eligibility criteria and required documents.
According to the commission, provisional status is typically assigned when some documents or certificates submitted by candidates are pending verification or require clarification. These may include proof of educational qualifications, caste or category certificates, age eligibility documents, or other official records required under the rules of the examination.
The UPSC Civil Services Examination is one of India’s most competitive recruitment exams and is conducted annually to select officers for prestigious services such as the Indian Administrative Service (IAS), Indian Police Service (IPS), and Indian Foreign Service (IFS), among others.
When a candidate’s result is marked as provisional, it does not mean the candidate has failed or been rejected. Instead, it indicates that the commission will confirm the candidate’s selection only after completing document verification and ensuring that all eligibility requirements are met. If the candidate successfully submits the required documents and clears verification, their provisional status will be removed and their selection will become final.
However, if discrepancies are found during the verification process or if a candidate fails to provide the required documents within the specified timeline, the commission may cancel the provisional result.
UPSC generally provides candidates with instructions and deadlines for submitting the necessary documents or clarifications. Therefore, candidates whose results are marked provisional must carefully follow the commission’s guidelines to ensure their final appointment is confirmed.
